Mission Statement
I started Size and Substance because I feel it’s time for smart, dynamic women to stop hating our bodies and tearing ourselves down. Our fixations can cripple us and prevent us from leading the fulfilling lives we want and deserve. Women can be both healthy and attractive without being a particular weight, body dimension or clothing size. Positive body image is about self-nurturing and acceptance. We don’t need to be perfect. I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I’m hoping to pass along information and my insights, and hope we can all learn something along the way.
As women, we also owe it to other women and ourselves to fight against negative perceptions and treatment of those of us who fall outside of the socially acceptable norm. Unhealthy and unrealistic expectations we receive about what our bodies should look and discrimination against those perceived as overweight is rampant. These messages become ingrained in us and pervade and contaminate how we perceive others and ourselves. We are more than our body size and we are all entitled to respect.
